The petition of Anne Gryme of Edgeworth, Lancashire, 13 October 1653

To the right wor[shi]p[fu]ll the Justic[e]s of peace & Quo[rum] att the Sessions of peace houlden att Manchester in the County of Lancaster the xiiith of October 1653
The humble Petic[i]on of Anne Gryme wife of Richard Gryme of Edgworth The said Richard Being a Souldier in the States Service in Scotland.
Humbly complayneing truly Sheweth vnto your good wor[shi]ps: That Wheras your petic[i]oners husband (Being an Inhabit[a]nt in the Towneshippe of Edgworth in the Parish of Bolton & come of good & honest Parentage there & of like good & honest Behaviour & Carriage himselfe) was constrayned in these hard tymes past for the better mentainance of himselfe & Familey to take vp Armes & become a Souldier, Whereby for a good space hee mentained himselfe & affoorded some mentainance towards his Familey & Charge att home: But now of late your Petic[i]oner haveing not heard from him Causeth her to feare or suspect him to be dead, & for the present your petic[i]oner is hard bestead to mentaine her selfe & Children & not able to paye house rent as formerly: Soe that now shee is debarred of houseroome & habitac[i]on for her selfe & Children Every one Lockeing the doores against them whereby your petic[i]oner & her Children are likely to starve for want of houseroome & habitac[i]on vnlesse your wor[shi]ps Favour & Assistance be shewed to them herein.
May itt therefore please your good wor[shi]ps to take the premises into your serious Considerac[i]ons And to g{rant} & give order to the Churchwardens & Overseers of Edgworth cu[m] Hambletts to provide an house of habit{ation} for your petic[i]oner & her Children soe as they may not be lost or starve for want of habitac[i]on And your pe{titioner} as in all duty bounden will pray for your wor[shi]ps in all happines long to continue.
