The petition of Alice Shorte of Preston, Lancashire, Midsummer 1667

To the right wor[shi]p[fu]ll the Justices of Peace and Quor[um] now sitteinge at Preston.
The humble petic[i]on of Alice Shorte of Preston widd[ow].
Humbly sheweth
That John Shorte yo[u]r petic[i]on[er]s late husband (for his faithfull service donne for o[u]r late kinge Charles the first of ever blessed memorie) was admitted a pensioner, & had the alloweance as other maimed soldiers had dureinge his life, But since his death yo[u]r petic[i]oner could never get the same, from the Treasurer or payer therof to the great impoverishinge of yo[u]r petic[i]oner & three small children.
Wherfore yo[u]r petic[i]on[er] humbly beseecheth yo[u]r wor[shi]ps to make such order as shee may yearely receive the said alloweance from the Trea[sure]r or payer thereof, And she as in duety bound will for ever pray &c
