The petition of Adam Ramshiere, City and County of Canterbury, 18 December 1655

To the right wor[shipfu]ll the Major Aldermen and Com[m]on Councell of the Citty of Canterbury now assembled in Burghmote.
The humble petic[i]on of Adam Ramshiere of the said Citty Currier:
Humblie sheweth that yo[u]r petic[i]on[e]r did serue the Parliament and Com[m]on Wealth by the space of Fower yeares in the late warres ag[ains]t the enemie of the same, and yo[u]r petic[i]o[ne]r having married a widow whose former husband was killed in the said service; and being now setled in this Citty desires to followe his said trade of a Currier within the Friors knowne by the name of Mr Suttons Fryors in the said Cittie w[hi]ch hee is informed hee cannot doe w[i]thout the License of this Court, hee being not a Freeman of this Citty. And hee being very poore is not able to purchase his Freedom:
May it therefore please yo[u]r wor[shi]pps the premisses considered to grant him an Order or Tollerac[i]on to vse his said Trade for some small yearlie sum[m]e of money vntill God shall enable him to purchase his Freedom, And hee shall Ever pray &c.
