Professor Lloyd Bowen

Co-Investigator at University of Cardiff

Lloyd is Professor of Early Modern History at Cardiff University.

His research has focused particularly on early modern Wales, gentry culture in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the nature of Civil War royalism.

He has published six books including recent texts on John Poyer, a civil war “turncoat”, and another on Edward Vaughan, a north Wales parliamentarian with a very colourful life story. He also collaborated with his fellow Co-Investigator on the ‘Civil War Petitions Project’, Professor Mark Stoyle, in editing the 2022 volume, Remembering the English Civil Wars. His current work explores the development of political vocabularies in the seventeenth century and an examination of a husband and wife team of inveterate petitioners. His concern for Welsh rugby players’ fitness leaves little time for anything else.
