'Upon the petition of William Wood of Yoxall, within this county of Staffordshire, showing that he was a soldier listed in Colonel Usher’s regiment at the first coming of the late Earl of Northampton with his Majesty’s forces into Staffordshire; afterwards in Colonel Richard Bagot’s regiment, under whose command he was in service at the raising of the sieges of Newark, Holtcaster, Beeston Castle, Eccleshall Castle, and divers other places within the kingdom of England. In which service he received many wounds, with the loss of his left hand; and the said Wood, having a wife and five small children to maintain. The truth whereof is certified by several persons of worth and quality. It is thereupon thought fit, and so ordered by the court, that the said William Wood shall receive a pension of three pounds a year, to be paid unto him by the treasurers of the maimed soldiers, who are hereby ordered to pay it accordingly.'
