Hawley and his brother Thomas, two children of John Hawley, had been cared for by James Hawley of Stockton (their grandfather) as the result of an order made at the last sessions. The court was now satisfied that James Hawley, 'having many children of his owne to p[ro]vide for, cannot without being much burdened and hurt in his Estate Continue to mayntayne & p[ro]vide for the said Two children'. It was therefore ordered that John Hawley (the younger of the two children) be sent back to Norton Lindsay to be 'provided for according to the law', while Thomas remained with their grandfather.
