‘Whereas John Cheston of Hillborow the last Assizes holden at Thetford in this County of Norff[olk] pr[e]ferred a peticon to the Judge of Assize shewinge that one Thomas Wright a soldier of Lenn Regis marryed one Mary Doe and had one Child by her borne in Lenn Regis aforesaid and lived there about three yeares, And after left his wife and childe there settled & went into Ireland, and his wife beinge driven into want went into the Cuntry to be relieved amongst her kin[d]red & pr[e]suminge upon the said Cheston his Charity came to his house sev[er]all tymes and there stayed some tymes two of three weekes and then went to other of her kinred & friends and after a while went to Lenn Regis againe where her Childe all that tyme remained and hired a roome at Lenn R[egis] aforesaid from weeke to weeke and continued there one moneth countinge one day and then was questioned befor[e] the mayor & Justices of Lenn R[egis] upon pr[e]tence that she had forsaken her childe was sent to Brid[e]well for one fortnight and they discharged from thence and sent to the said John Cheston to Hilborow aforesaid, who at the last sessions of the peace holden the one and Twentith day of January last at Lenn Regis complayned to the Court & shewed that the said Mary Wright was not lawfully settled with the said John Cheston And the Court then hearinge the said John Cheston & some of the Inhabitants of Lenn Regis aforesaid ordered that the said Mary Wright and her Child sho[u]ld be settled at Hilborow aforesaid without pr[e]iudice till the next Sessions or gen[er]all Gaolle deliv[er]y to be hodlen for this County & there pr[o]vided for till other order to the contrary upon w[hi]ch peticon the Judge abovenamed referred the matters in the said peticon to the justices of the peace at there next Sessions to be holden at Norw[i]ch for the said county & desired them to settle the said Mary Wright and her Childe according to Law And the Justices of peace now at theis Sessions heareinge the s[ai]d peticon and the said Cheston doe order the said Mary and her Childe to be sent to Lenn Regis aforesaid and there pr[o]vided for as the Law in that Case requireth'.
