Notes

Upon the humble petition of Mary Elmes, relict of William Elmes late of Towcester, showing that her said husband was wounded in his late Majesty’s service, and had in regards of this faithful service a pension allowed him that he received until his death. He had left her with four small children in a poor condition, altogether unable to provide for themselves. She therefore prayed something what the court should think fit for the placing out of one of her children, who was now fit to be put to a trade. It was therefore ordered that Henry Benson Esq, one of the Treasurers for the county pay her forty shillings towards the placing of her said child for an apprentice. This appears to be an earlier draft version of the order recorded in the order book for Easter Sessions 1684. c.f. her petition, which stated that she was o be given 4 s.
