Notes

fol. 40: Sir John Robinson and Mr Wood, two of the JPs, had examined the petition of Margery Griffith, widow, and a certificate signed by several officers of his late Majesty’s army and others. They certified to the court that Margery’s husband, Joseph Griffith, had been a lieutenant of foot under Lord Hopton and afterwards, a cornet of horse under Captain William Barker. In the latter capacity, Joseph Griffith had received wounds in a skirmish at Thame in Oxfordshire whereof he died, leaving Margery in great poverty. In addition, her son Charles Griffith, who had maintained her since, was cast away at sea near the Canaries on 2 April 1675 while under the command of Mr Hare. She was awarded a gratuity of 40 s. out of the surplusage.
