The petition of Mr John How of Oulton sets forth that he voluntarily entered into the service of King Charles the First of blessed memory in the late unhappy civil wars of this kingdom under the command of Sir George Lisle against the then rebels, wherein he not only received divers wounds but consumed his estate, and is now reduced to great necessity. The court was pleased to add the further sum of 20 s. a year to his former pension, and order the treasurer for maimed soldiers for this division to pay him £5 a year, to be paid quarterly until this court shall order the contrary. (He most likely served under Sir George Lisle at the siege of Colchester in 1648.)
