"Whereas it appeareth … that John Halstaffe late of the citty of Exon was a souldier in the service of the Common wealth from the beginning of the warrs untill the disbanding of the souldiers by order of Parlyament & was wounded and maymed & his right arme broken in the said service & haveing a wife & 3 children & noe meanes to maintaine them, It is therefore ordered that the Treasurer … shall pay … forty shillings for his present releife, and to be further considered of when he shall procure a certificate under a commisionate officers hand and seale."
