Stevenson was taken upon the Commission of Array, and was afterwards a soldier in the king’s army, under the command firstly of Major Robert Ayscoghe and then Captain Robert Wolby. He was much impaired in his health by reason of his war service, and was unable to maintain himself and his wife.
