Gill's pension had previously been granted to Gyles Capell of Sherborne, who had moved from Dorset to London to pursue his trade in feltmaking. Gill was reported to have been 'a serjant... commanded by his highnesse Prince Robert in the service of King Charles the first and who alsoe in the said service received divers wounds in his body & withal lost the use of his right legg whereby he is much disabled in getting his livelihood'.
