Notes

Whereas the court was this day informed by the humble petition of Elizabeth Warrilowe, late wife of John Warrilowe, who living in the parish of Caverswall about five years ago, went for a soldier against the rebels in Ireland, under the command of Sergeant-Major Berrie. Berrie being slain in that service, and her husband wounded, he lay in some distress in Ireland during the time of his wounds. And after his recovery was again retained in the same service under Sir Philip Percifal [Percival or Perceval], and her said husband going with the Parliament’s commissioners to Dublin, when the same should have been delivered up to the Parliament. But that business not taking effect, he and diverse other soldiers were shipped for the north of Ireland, and the ship wherein he was, was cast away, and so he lost all his good, and himself [?and the petitioner] and children cast on shore in Wales, where having no means at all to subsist he fell into great and grievous sickness, so that he himself, the petitioner and three children were from there sent from constable to constable to Caverswall aforesaid, where he died, and the petitioner left with the said children without any means to relieve them, and utterly unable to subsist any longer. Therefore she prayed the assistance of this court for their relief. Wherefore, in compassion of the distressed condition of the petitioner, the court has thought good hereby to certify the truth of her distressed estate, and to commend the same unto the charitable consideration of all their neighbours and countrymen inhabiting in the said county, not doubting but that in so charitable a work (as feeling members of one another’s miseries) they will in all places where the petitioner shall come afford her their charitable benevolence, which will be acceptable to Almighty God, and comfortable to her and her poor children.
