Notes

'Upon the petition of Mrs. Dorothy Fowke, widow, late wife of John Fowke of Gunson, Esquire, showing that her son Francis Fowke, Sargeant-Major to Colonel Martin, was deprived of his natural life in the Parliament’s service, and left nine small children, who have no means but what they have from the petitioner, it is ordered that she shall be forborne her weekly pay till further order. And all officers are to forebear to collect the arrears of her weekly pay or any hereafter till further order.'

[Additional notes: Colonel Francis Martin succeeded to the colonelcy of Thomas Ballard’s regiment in the summer of 1643; which would indicate that Dorothy Fowke’s husband was either Lieutenant Francis Fowke junior, or (more probably) Captain Francis Foukes senior, both of whom were listed as officers in that regiment in 1642 [Peacock, The Army Lists of the Roundheads and Cavaliers (1874), p. 43]. Captain Foukes (or Fook) had earlier been listed as captain of the third company of Ballard’s regiment earmarked for Ireland in 1641 [Peacock, p. 69]. The surviving Francis was probably the same Francis Fowke listed as lieutenant-colonel in Thomas Sadleir’s regiment in 1651 [Wanklyn, Reconstructing the New Model Army, ii, pp. 207, 270].]
