Notes

Fol. 39: It appeared to the court that Andrew Appleton served the Commonwealth in the wars, both by land and sea, as a trumpeter until two years ago, when he died in the sinking of a ship called the John under the command of Sir George ?Asdewe knt. He left a wife and two daughters living in Black Jack Alley in Wapping in the parish of Whitechapel. The mother, who was very poor and unable to provide for the family, carried the children to Whitehall and then ran away. The children would have perished had they not been provided for the Council of State. As the parents had last been lawfully settled at Wapping in the parish of Whitechapel, it was ordered that the children be conveyed there and provided for by the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the parish.
