The warrant for John Griffen, City and County of Canterbury, 30 August 1680

Trusty and Welbeloved Wee greet you well letting you weet That Wee minding ye Relief of our poore Subject John Griffen who served our Royall Father (of blessed memory) at Nasby fight and ourself at Worcester fight and ventured life and Limbs in our Service under ye Com[m]and of Capt[ain] Strood our Governor of Dover Castle; who alsoe formerly lived in good repute and Creditt, but now by reason of his great age of sixty foure yeares and ye hurt he received in helping to quench ye Fire which sometime since happened in ye Audite House of our Cathedrall of Christ Church Canterbury is unable to worke & reduced to great want, all which appear’s [sic.] to Us by good Certif[ica]t[e], In Considerac[i]on thereof Have given and granted and by these presents for Us our heires and Successors doe give and grant unto the said John Griffen the Roome and place of one of our Almesmen belonging to our Cathedrall of Christ Church Canterbury for and during his naturall life if any such place be there now voyd or the next that shall become voyd after the placing of such as have our former grant for ye like place there. Wherefore Wee Will and Com[m]and you not only to admitt and place the said John Griffen in ye said Almesmans place belonging to our Cathedrall of Christ Church Canterbury aforesaid, but also to pay and allow unto him from time to time after his admittance all such Wages Fees dutys and other allowances as shal be due and incident to ye same in as large ample and beneficiall manner as any other our Almesmen there have receive and enjoy or of right ought to have receive and enjoy by ye Foundac[i]on thereof. Provided always that if the said John Griffen have any Almesmans place else where then this our present grant unto him to be voyd and of none effect. And these our Letters shal be your sufficient Warrant. Given under our Signet at our Palace of Westm[inste]r the Thirtyeth day of August in ye Two & Thirtyeth yeare of our Reigne.

To our Trusty and Welbeloved our Auditor and Receiver Generall of our County of Midd[le]sex, the Deane and Chapter of our Cathedrall Church of Christ Church Canterbury, now and for the time being and to any others whome it shall or may concerne.
