The warrant for Edward Ashman, City and County of Canterbury, 31 December 1673

Trusty and Welbeloved Wee greet you well letting you Weet that Wee minding the Reliefe of our poore subject Edward Ashman, Who served our late Royall Father of glorious memory, & took Armes for Vs in the Rising of Kent for which hee was barbarously vsed by ye Rebells Who burnt all ye Stock of his Trade, and hee being now aged sixty six yeares, and thereby, & by his disease of the Gowt, vnable to Work for a Living, In considerac[i]on thereof Wee have given & granted and by these pr[e]sents for Vs our heires & successors Doe give and grant Vnto the sayd Edward Ashman the Roome & place of one of our Almesmen belonging to Our Cathedrall Church of Canterbury if any such place be there now voyd or the next that shall become voyd after the placing of such as have our former Grant for the like place there for and during his natural life Wherefore Wee Will and Com[m]and you not only to admitt & place the sayd Edward Ashman in the sayd Almesmans place belonging to our Cathedrall afores[ai]d But alsoe to pay & allow Vnto him from tyme to tyme after his admittance all such Wages Fees Dutyes & other allowances as shal be due and incident to the same in as large ample and beneficiall manner as any other our Almesmen there have receive and enjoy or of right ought to have receive and enjoy by the Foundac[i]on thereof Provided allways that if the sayd Edward Ashman have any Almesman’s place elsewhere Then this our present Grant vnto him to be voyd and of none effect And these Our Letters shal be yo[u]r sufficient Warant Given vnder our signet att our Palace of Westm[inste]r the one & thirtyeth Day of December in the five & twentyeth yeare of our Reigne

To our Trusty and Welbeloved Deane & Chapter of our Cathedrall Church of Canterbury now & for ye time being and to any others Whom it shall or may concerne
