The certificate for William Gotherd of Whiston, Lancashire, January 1664

These are to certify all whom it may Concerne That William Gotherd At the begin[in]ge of the late warrs, Tooke vpp Armes & was A Souldier for his late ma[jes]tye vnder the command of S[i]r Henery Slater & served vnder him at Leigh vntill it was taken, that hee was at Houghon comon fight, And three seu[er]all tymes at Boulton in the Mores & at taking it, and Leverpoole when princ[e] Rup[er]t comanded in Cheefe, That hee was in Warrington garrison vntill it was deliu[er]ed, And at Hessand More fight neare Yorke, & after at Ormeschurch fight still vnder the same comand, so longe as there weare any force for his said late mai[es]ty in armes in the said County & that hee never disserted the said service nor tooke armes against his said ma[jes]ty nor against his grace that now is, but was eu[er] faithfull to the Crowne That hee is very poare & needy having A wyffe and many Cheldren who depend meerely vpon his labors and Industry beeinge A laborer in the Coalemynes at Whiston & now growinge very weake & aged is not able to subsist w[i]th out reeleeff as an Indigent soldier, All which wee doe Certify as A known truth to vs whose names are subscrybed

<{Illegible}wstorne ye Petic[i]on[e]r was my owne Soldier from ye {illegible} served for our Towne of Bedford, But liveing {illegible}ing yt one Christofer Whittle A Pension[e]r is lately {illegible} I desire yo[u]r as[i]stance either in granting him {illegible}r in case yt bee already disposed of, ye next yt {illegible} am satisfied yt ye Man which hath ever beene loyall & {illegible} & Indigent Witnes my hand>
