I doe hereby certefy that Maior Elias Struys by vertue of a Com[m]ission from the Earle of Essex for a Troope of Horse or a Companie of Foote was in actuall service as Capt[ai]n of a Foote Companie from the fourth day of August 1642 vntill the 21th of September 1643 And as Serieant Maior of the Forces of Hampshire assembled at ye Seige of Portsmouth, & for the safety of yt County from the 14 day of August 1642 vntill the 21 of September 1643. And as Com[m]issary of ye Artillery & am[m]unic[i]on from the s[ai]d 14 day of August 1642 vntill the s[ai]d 21 of September 1643 & from that tyme hee was entertained as Maior & Capt[ai]n in Portsmouth Garison (according to a Com[m]and from the Com[m]ittee of safety to that purpose) vntill the 28 day of Aprill 1644 at which tyme hee dyed of such wounds as hee received in the service vnder me at Cheriton battle. In his seu[er]all services hee hath behaved himselfe very Diligently faithfully & valiantly Given vnder my hand this 22 day of July 1646.
