The certificate for Thomas Mortimer senior of Morchard Bishop, Devon, 1 January 1676

Wee whose names are herevnto subscribed, Officers and Inhabitants of the Parish of Morchard Epi[scopi] in the County of Devon, Doe Certifie to his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the peace of the County aforesaid and all others whom it may concerne, That Thomas Mortimer the Elder of our said p[ar]ish of Morchard Epi[scopi] husbandman, Whoe heretofore mayntayned himselfe and family by his Industy [sic.] and Labor Vntill the begininge of the late vnhappy Warr he was pressed forth a Souldier in his Ma[jes]ties Service and soe contynued for the space of Eight yeares, First vnder the Command of Colonell Apsleigh, next vnder the command of Colonell Cooke and lastely vnder the command of Captaine Clarke, In which Seruice he receiued seuerall cuts and wounds in his body, by meanes whereof he is, and hath beene for a longe tyme Impotent and vnable to prouide for himselfe and family as may appeare not only by the signes thereof yet vpon his body but by some other officers and souldiers of the same company, who are yet liuinge, And therefore humbly desires to be Releiued (now in his old age) out of his Ma[jes]ties Hospitall, as one of his said Ma[jes]ties maymed souldiers, And in testimony of the truth of this Certificate Wee haue sett our hands, This First day of January in the 27th yeare of the Raigne of our Soueraigne Lord Charles the Second by the grace of god of England Scotland France and Ireland Kinge Defender of the Faith &c Anno[que] D[omi]ni 1675
