The certificate for Stephen Chapman of Tavistock, Devon, 29 September 1675

To the Honourable his Majesties Justices of the peace for the County of Devon

These are to Certifie That Stephen Chapman of Tavistocke in the said County of Devon Carpenter was a Souldier vnder the Command of Captaine John Jacob in the Regiment of S[i]r Henry Cary knight, and that he was eminent for his loyaltie and Sufferings in the defence of his late Majesties Royall person and government and continued faythfull to his trust, and not deserted the same by taking vp Armes against his said late Majestie, or his Majestie that now is, or otherwise, and that hee received seuerall Wounds in the said Service, and is now maymed indigent aged sickely and disabled in body for worke, and that hee is soe impoverished vnder the late vsurped powers, as that hee is destitute of any Competent subsitence or Livelyhood. Wherefore wee doe hereby recommend him as a person fitt to receive a yearely Pension according to a late Act of Parliament.
