The certificate for Robert Ward of Sutton, Sussex, 22 March 1662

Wee whose names are subscribed doe hereby certify the right wor[shipfu]ll the Justices of the Bench att the Quarter Sessions of the peace held att Arundell for the west part of this Countie That the bearer hereof Robert Ward aged as wee are credibly informed neare Threescore yeares is a person very well knowne vnto vs and hath as ever wee could heare of to the contrary beene a laborious and carefull man to live And that in the tyme of the late warrs hee did voluntarily goe into the kings Army and there faithfully served his Ma[jes]ty as a Trooper vnder the comaund of S[i]r Christopher Lewkenor for severall yeares togeather to the end of the warr And that now by reason of his hard service there his greate labour all his lifetyme and old age now come vpon him, is become feeble and not able to take that paines for his livelihood as formerly hee hath donne and hath but little else to provide for himselfe and his distracted wife w[hi]ch is a greate chardge to him, all w[hi]ch pr[e]misses considered wee desire yo[u]r worshipps that hee maie have a penc[i]on allowed to him yearely as to yo[u]r worhipps shall seeme meete Given vnder o[u]r hands dated the two and twentith day of March An[n]o D[o]m[ini] 1661.
