The certificate for Richard Maudsley of Long Preston, West Riding of Yorkshire, 20 April 1674

To the Right worsh[i]ppfull his Ma[jes]ties Justices of the Peace for the West RR[idin]g of the County of Yorke &c.
Wee whose names are herevnder-writen (being Inhabitants of the Towne of Longpr[e]ston within the said RR[iding]) doe hereby certifye vnto your sayd worsh[i]ps that the bearer hereof Richard Maudsley of Longpreston aforesaid was a souldier and served in the warrs vnder his late Ma[jes]tye King Charles the first (of blessed mem[or]y) and also suffered much hardshipp in his said Ma[jes]ties service whereby hee was and still is much disabled as by a wound on his right arme may (to yo[u]r worsh[i]ps) appeare, and hath formerly beene before y[ou]r worsh[i]ps or before some other of his sayd Ma[jes]ties Justices and had his name entered amongst the rest of his Ma[jes]ties penc[i]on[e]rs but by reason of the great number of penc[i]onn[e]rs (exceeding the pay) hee was put of till the death the first penc[i]onn[e]r which was Mr John Read late of Austwicke deceased. Nev[er]theles was then also intercepted by another getting the grant of the penc[i]on before him, and soe still put of vntill the death of the next penc[i]onn[e]r which is now happened by the death of one Richard Woodworth &c.
May it therefore please y[ou]r worsh[i]ps (the pr[e]misses considered) to grant and affoord this bearer y[ou]r help in the addmitting of him a penc[i]on[e]r whereby he may receive such penc[i]on as the rest of his said Ma[jes]ties penc[i]onn[e]rs do (for his necessity is very great,) and wee shall ever pray &c:

The petic[i]on Considered wee doe ord[e]r yt ye s[ai]d Richard Maudsley may bee admitted penc[i]oner instead of ye late deceased Rich[ard] Woodworth and receive his qu[a]rterly penc[i]on being vjs viijd and yt hee may be entered into the penc[i]on Roll ye next Pontefract sessions ord[e]r to ye effecting of ye same.
