These are to Certifie yt Phillyp Shapcott of Samford peuerrell in ye Countie of Devon; formerlie serued his Ma[jes]tie of Blesed Memorie Charles ye first in all this vnhappie warrs heere in England; vnder ye Command of Maior Humphry Sydenham; as allsoe ensigne vnder ye Command of Captaine Henrie Southcott & was Faithfull in ye s[ai]d seruice; neu[e]r knowne too wauer in ye least; but Continued Faithfull too ye end But nowe; by linge in ye Colde in ye said seruice & other ill disaster: w[hi]ch happened vnto him; one ye same accompt; is not able to gett a sufficient maintaineaunce; but by Reason of ye aforesaid Imedements w[hi]ch hee tooke in ye sayd service; Remains a verie poore man; & is at this present trulie Indigent and an obiecte of Charitie,
