The certificate for Nicholas Pointer of Tavistock, Devon, 18 April 1688

To the Honourable his Maiesties Justices of the peace for the county of Deuon.

These are to certifie that Nicholas Pointer of the Burrough of tauistocke in the county of Deuon fuller was a souldier in the late unhappy wars under the command of Major John Jacob in the Regiment of Sir Henry Cary Knight, and that hee was eminent for his loyalty, and sufferings in the defence of the Royall person, and gouerment of his late Majestie king Charles the first of blessed memory, and continued faithfull to his trust, and not deserted the same by takeing up Arms against his said late Majestie, or his late Majestie king Charles the second of blessed memory, or his Majestie that now is, or otherwise, and that hee was shot in diuerse parts of his body, and receiued seuerall wounds in the said seruice, and endured much hard duty, and cruelty, and was at Pendenis Castle during the whole time of the seige, and that hee is now maimed indigent, very aged, sikely, and disabled in body for worke, and is soe impouerished under the late usurped powers as that hee is destitute of any competent subsistance or liuelyhood, Wherefore wee doe hereby recommend him as a person fit to receiue a yearly pension according to a late Act of Parliament, giuen under our hands the eighteenth day of Aprill in the fowerth year of the Raigne of our soueraigne Lord King James the second, &c:
