The certificate for Hugh Crosse of Tavistock, Devon, 12 July 1684

To the Honourable his Majesties Justices of the Peace for the County of Deuon
These are to Certifie That Hugh Crosse of the Burrough of Tavistocke in the said County of Devon was a Souldier in the late vnhappie Warrs vnder the Command of Captaine John Seymour, and alsoe vnder the Command of Captaine Mallery in the Regiment of Sir Richard Greenvile, and that hee was eminent for his loyalty and Sufferings in the defence of his late Ma[jes]ties Royall person and Government, and continued faithfull to his trust and not deserted the same by taking vp Armes against his said late Majestie or his Ma[jes]tie that now is or otherwise, and that he received Severall Wounds in the said Service and was imprisoned and plundered, and endured much hard duty and Cruelty, and that hee is now maimed, indigent, very aged, sickly, and disabled in body for worke and is soe impoverished under the late vsurped powers as that hee is destitute of any competent Subsistence or Livelyhood, Wherefore Wee doe hereby recommend him as a person fit to receiue a yearely Pension according to a late Act of Parliament. Given vnder our hands the Tweluth day of July in the xxxvith yeare of the Reigne of our Sovereigne Lord King Charles the Second &c Annoque Dom[ini] 1684
