Crediton May ye 18th 1689

Wee whose names are herunto subscribed doe certifie whom it may concearne, that the Bearer hereof Francis Brownscombe of Crediton abovesaid (in the county of Devon weaver) hath been an auntien Souldier, und[e]r King Charles the first and King Charles the second under whome he came to very great Hardships and likely to starve in the Castle of Pendenis; and likwise received two great wounds in his body, one being a daungerous Cut on the head, and alsoe was shot in his thigh: by meanes whereof (being now grown old) is unable to get his Maintainance; wherefore wee Believe the same Francis Brownscombe, to be a very fit object to receive the Hospitall money, which Thomas Tauton, late of Crediton a Maimed souldier (now deceased) did receive.
